What fleet insurance protects
A corporate program combines the insurance of all of a company's vehicles: cars and trucks, buses, special equipment and trailers. It protects the vehicles themselves against damage and theft, and the company's liability to third parties when operating the vehicles. This solution suits logistics and transport companies, distributors with their own delivery, construction and service organisations, leasing companies, and any business with several company cars.
Compulsory and voluntary cover
Compulsory motor third-party liability insurance (MTPL) is required by law in Kazakhstan for every vehicle in operation. It covers harm to the life, health and property of third parties within the limits set by law, but does not compensate damage to the company's own vehicles. For passenger carriers, compulsory insurance of the carrier's liability to passengers also applies.
Voluntary types extend the protection:
- CASCO — damage, total loss and theft of your own vehicles in road accidents, fire, natural disasters, falling objects and unlawful acts of third parties;
- voluntary liability insurance in excess of the MTPL limits — in case of serious accidents with major damage;
- driver and passenger insurance against accidents;
- insurance of additional equipment and carried cargo — on separate terms;
- service options: towing, accident commissioner, replacement car.
What is usually not covered under CASCO
- driving by a person not authorised under the contract, without a driving licence or under the influence;
- intent of the policyholder or driver, use of the vehicle for a purpose other than intended, participation in competitions;
- normal wear and tear, breakdown of components and assemblies without external cause;
- theft where the keys or documents were left in the vehicle or the anti-theft system requirements were not met;
- operation of a technically faulty vehicle.
What determines the price
The price is built up for each vehicle and for the fleet as a whole. Taken into account are the makes, age and value of the vehicles, their use (business trips, delivery, intercity carriage, taxi, rental), the territory of operation, the number of drivers and their experience, storage conditions — a guarded car park or the street — and satellite monitoring. The fleet's loss history matters greatly: companies with a driver control system and a low accident rate get better terms. The premium is also affected by the size of the deductible and the chosen repair method.
How to choose a program and what to check in the contract
- Fleet composition — adding new vehicles during the term, removing those sold, and recalculation of the premium.
- Territory — Kazakhstan only or also neighbouring countries for international trips.
- Authorised drivers — a list of drivers or any persons acting on the company's instructions.
- Sum insured — aggregate or non-aggregate, that is, whether it reduces after a payment.
- Repair — at a workshop on the insurer's referral, at a dealer, or a cash payment; whether depreciation is taken into account.
- Deductible — the amount, application to each claim, and to at-fault and not-at-fault accidents.
- Claims procedure — deadlines for notification, inspection and approval of repairs.
What to do after an accident and other events
- Stop, make the scene safe and, if necessary, call an ambulance and the police.
- Have the incident documented as required by law and record the circumstances with photos and video.
- Notify the insurer and the company's responsible employee within the period stated in the contract.
- Do not start repairs before the insurer's inspection.
- Hand over the documents: the policy, vehicle registration certificate, driving licence and police documents.
In a large fleet it is convenient to appoint one person responsible for insured events and to keep a register of losses: this speeds up settlement and helps analyse the accident rate.
How Polis Re helps
The broker collects data on the fleet, compares insurers' offers for compulsory and voluntary cover, helps set uniform deadlines and procedures for adding vehicles, and supports the settlement of insured events. You can calculate the approximate cost in the fleet calculator, and separately in the MTPL and CASCO calculators. To calculate a program for the whole fleet, send a request to the broker.
