Health insurance: luxury or practical necessity?

Voluntary health insurance (VHI) helps you arrange access to medical services in advance and limit unexpected costs within the chosen program. Such a policy does not replace state guarantees and the compulsory social health insurance (MHI) system, but supplements them: the client gets an agreed network of clinics, an appointment procedure, service support and a specific list of covered care.

✓ In short: health insurance is useful not in itself, but when its cover matches your state of health, lifestyle, family needs and expected level of service.

The cost depends on age, service territory, the set of services, limits, deductible, state of health, and whether the cover is individual or corporate.

How health insurance works

After the contract is concluded, the insured person calls the number or uses the app specified in the policy. The coordinator clarifies the symptoms and arranges care at a clinic from the agreed network. Planned examinations, expensive diagnostics or hospitalization often require prior approval. If the client goes to a clinic on their own without the referral required by the contract, the insurer may refuse to pay for the service.

What matters in VHI is not the number of promises in the advertising description, but the exact terms of the contract. Two programs with similar names can differ significantly in the list of clinics, dental limits, medication coverage, home doctor visits and the rules for treating chronic diseases.

What a program may include

  • outpatient care: doctor consultations, prescribed tests and instrumental examinations;
  • emergency care: calling out a medical team and medical transportation, if this is expressly provided for by the program;
  • inpatient care: hospitalization, treatment and stay within the set limit;
  • dentistry: emergency or planned treatment with certain restrictions;
  • home doctor visits in the specified service territory;
  • medication coverage as prescribed by a doctor, within the list and the sum;
  • preventive examinations and check-ups, when they are included in the chosen package.

The presence of each item must be confirmed in the insurance program. For example, the word "dentistry" does not always mean prosthetics or implants, and "inpatient care" may include only emergency hospitalization. The key words of the contract are limit, exclusion, approval and territory of cover.

VHI, MHI and paid healthcare: what is the difference

Option How care is provided What to check
MHI and state guarantees Medical care is provided under the rules of the state system currently in force and provided that the person has the relevant entitlement or status. Insured status, registration with a clinic, referral and the list of available services.
VHI The insurance company arranges and pays for the services expressly included in the contract. The clinic network, the sum insured, exclusions, waiting periods and approval.
Self-payment The patient chooses a clinic and pays for each service out of their own funds. The cost of treatment, the qualifications of specialists and the need for repeated expenses.

These options do not have to be set against each other. A person can use the state system for one group of services, VHI for another, and pay for individual procedures themselves. A practical choice depends on how often you seek care, the availability of doctors in your city and the family budget.

Who benefits most from a VHI policy

Families with children value quick access to a pediatrician, tests and home doctor visits. Working professionals value convenient appointments and the ability to have diagnostics without a long break from work. For employers, a medical program helps build a benefits package, but requires clear rules for including employees and family members.

People with chronic diseases should read the exclusions especially carefully. Some programs cover only an acute condition, others allow monitoring or treatment within certain limits, and still others exclude previously diagnosed diseases. A manager's verbal promise does not replace the written terms.

What the cost of health insurance depends on

There is no single price for VHI. The insurance premium is formed after the parameters of the program and the group of insured persons are assessed. The calculation may be affected by:

  • the age and number of participants;
  • the city and service territory;
  • the level of the clinics and the breadth of the medical network;
  • the sum insured and internal limits;
  • the inclusion of dentistry, inpatient care, medication and check-ups;
  • the deductible or the share of self-payment;
  • the health questionnaire and information about previously identified diseases;
  • an individual, family or corporate format.

A program that is too cheap may have a narrow network of clinics and small limits, while an expensive one may contain services the client does not plan to use. That is why offers can be compared properly only when the scope of cover is the same.

! Important: voluntary health insurance is provided by a licensed insurance company. An intermediary can help compare offers and prepare documents, but the insurer that accepts the risk and makes the insurance payment or pays for medical services remains the insurance organization.

How to choose a program without overpaying

  1. Define your goal. Do you need only consultations and diagnostics, or also inpatient care, dentistry, medication and home care.
  2. Make a list of clinics. Check whether the medical organizations and specialists you need are nearby.
  3. Compare limits. The total sum insured does not show the restrictions on individual services.
  4. Study the exclusions. Pay particular attention to chronic diseases, pregnancy, prevention, sports injuries and planned surgeries.
  5. Clarify the procedure for seeking care. Find out whether you can book directly or need to get a coordinator's referral each time.
  6. Check the documents. Compare the advertised offer, the application, the contract and the insurance rules before paying.

When an insured event occurs

Use the number specified in the policy or in the mobile app. State your full name, contract number, symptoms and location. Follow the coordinator's instructions and keep medical documents, prescriptions, invoices and receipts. In case of an immediate threat to life, first call the available emergency services, and notify the insurer in the manner and within the period set by the contract.

If approval of a service is refused, ask for the reason to be explained with reference to a specific clause of the contract. This will help you understand whether the case is an exclusion, whether a limit has been exceeded, or whether an additional medical opinion is required.

Check before you buy

  • → who the insurer is and whether its licence is valid;
  • → the exact start and end of insurance cover;
  • → the list of clinics and the service territory;
  • → the total sum insured and the limits for each section;
  • → the diseases and procedures that are not covered;
  • → waiting periods and the requirements for the health declaration;
  • → the rules for paying for services outside the agreed network;
  • → the conditions for terminating the contract and refunding part of the premium.

Health insurance: necessity or luxury?

VHI cannot be considered a mandatory purchase for every person, but for many families and companies it is a practical tool for managing costs and time. The value of a policy shows when the program is clear, the medical network is accessible and the limits match real needs. If a contract is bought only because of a low price and is not studied in advance, expectations may not match the actual cover.

The optimal health insurance is not the most expensive or the most extensive, but the one that covers the likely scenarios: a doctor's consultation, diagnostics, treatment and organizational support. Before buying, request an up-to-date calculation, read the rules and ask questions about all ambiguous terms.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose any clinic?

Care is usually arranged at medical organizations from the insurer's network. Visiting another clinic is allowed only if there is a corresponding condition or prior approval.

Does VHI cover chronic diseases?

It depends on the program. Full exclusion, cover of exacerbations only, or a separate limit are all possible. The answer must be set out in the contract and the insurance rules.

Can I include family members?

In many individual and corporate programs this is possible, but the rate, age restrictions and set of services are calculated separately.

Do I need a policy if I have MHI?

VHI does not cancel MHI. It is chosen as an additional service and cover within a commercial program. The decision depends on the availability of the services you need and your personal priorities.

Check the current terms

The content of medical programs, the clinic network, rates and exclusions change. Before concluding a contract, get a personal offer and make sure that all the services important to you are expressly stated in the documents. Do not rely only on old prices or the general name of a package.
