An insurance company assumes risk under a contract, calculates the premium, builds reserves and makes payment when an insured event occurs. As of 1 June 2026, the insurance sector of Kazakhstan comprised 25 insurance organizations, of which 10 operated in the life insurance sector.
The official registers of valid and terminated licences are available on the page “Licences for activity in the insurance market”.

General insurance and life insurance
Insurance organizations work in one of two sectors. General insurance covers property, transport, liability, cargo, accidents and other classes that are not life insurance. Life insurance includes life protection programmes, annuities and other classes provided for by the licence.
A company from one sector does not automatically gain the right to sell products of the other. When checking, it is therefore important to look not only at whether the organization appears in the general list but also at the specific class of insurance in the licence.
How to check an insurance company
- Verify the legal name and BIN. The brand on the website may differ from the full name.
- Check the valid licence. Find out the number, date and permitted classes.
- Look at the regulator’s announcements. Restrictions, suspensions and reissues matter.
- Study the financial indicators. Assets, capital, reserves, profit and the structure of investments.
- Check the rating. Take into account the type, scale and date, if a rating has been assigned.
- Assess the service. Contact channels, response times and the claims settlement procedure.
- Verify the payment details. The premium is transferred to the official bank details.
What to compare besides price
- the list of insured risks;
- exclusions and grounds for refusal;
- the sum insured and sub-limits;
- a conditional or unconditional deductible;
- the territory and term of cover;
- the policyholder’s obligations after an event;
- the list of documents and payment deadlines;
- the procedure for termination and return of the premium.
The cheapest policy does not always provide comparable protection. For a fair comparison, ask for offers with identical input parameters and obtain any material clarifications in writing.
Compulsory types of insurance
Compulsory insurance services are provided only by insurance companies that hold the relevant licence for the required class. An agent, broker, bank or online platform may take part in arranging the policy, but does not become the insurer. Liability under the policy is borne by the organization named in the contract.
The terms of compulsory insurance are largely determined by law, but the quality of service differs. A client can assess the convenience of electronic arrangement, the availability of support, the procedure for registering an event and the speed of communication.
How to read financial indicators
A large amount of assets does not in itself prove absolute reliability. You need to assess their quality and liquidity, the adequacy of capital, reserves, risk concentration, reinsurance and the dynamics of payments. Indicators are compared over several periods and taking the structure of the portfolio into account.
A high volume of premiums may reflect business growth, but without an analysis of the loss ratio and expenses it does not show the quality of that business. Similarly, a low payout ratio may be explained by a young portfolio, long contract terms or the specifics of the product.
What to do before paying for a policy
- obtain the rules and a draft of the contract;
- check that the full name, IIN, object and term are correct;
- make sure the manager uses the company’s official channel;
- do not transfer money to a personal card;
- keep the receipt and the electronic policy;
- check the registration of the contract, if an official service is available;
- note down the contact details for notifying an insured event.
If a company has changed its name or ceased operations
A renaming does not always mean the end of obligations: the legal entity may continue to operate under a new brand. In a reorganization or liquidation, the insurance portfolio may be transferred. The holder of an old policy should check the BIN, the regulator’s decisions and official announcements about the successor or the liquidation commission.
Do not delete old documents. The policy, the rules, receipts and correspondence help to establish the content of the obligation and the responsible organization.
Historical list
The list above shows the names of insurance organizations given in the earlier version of the page. Some companies may have been renamed, merged, surrendered their licence or ceased operations. The list is useful for archive searches, but does not confirm current status in 2026.
Summary
Choosing an insurance company in Kazakhstan begins with checking the licence and the specific class of insurance. Then financial strength, contract terms and the quality of claims settlement are compared. The historical list is preserved for reference, and the current composition of the market should be checked against the official register.
