Why a broker needs several partner insurance companies
An insurance broker does not issue policies itself — it selects for the client the insurer and the terms that best suit the specific risk. The wider the circle of insurance companies a broker works with, the more options can be compared. This matters for several reasons:
- different specializations. Some companies are strong in motor insurance and mass-market products for private individuals, others in insuring large industrial facilities, cargo or liability;
- different capacity. Not every company is ready to accept a large risk in full: the size of capital and the reinsurance protection available matter;
- different terms. For the same object, insurers may offer different cover, deductibles, exclusions and cost;
- a different approach to claims settlement. Companies differ in the time they take to consider applications and in their document requirements.
How a risk is placed
- The broker collects information about the object of insurance and the client's needs.
- It prepares a request and sends it to several insurance companies with suitable licences.
- It compares the offers received on cover, limits, deductible, exclusions and price.
- It presents the client with a summary and recommendations; the decision on the choice of insurer is made by the client.
- It supports the drawing up of the contract, and then renewal and the settlement of insured events.
Reinsurance and retrocession
No insurance company keeps all the risks it has accepted on its own retention. It passes part of the liability to reinsurers — this way a large loss is spread among several market participants, and the insurer retains its ability to pay compensation. Retrocession is the next level: the reinsurer, in turn, passes part of the risks it has accepted to other reinsurance companies. For the client this means that behind a large insurance contract stands not only a specific insurance company but also its reinsurance protection. For more on how this works, see the reinsurance section.
How to check an insurance company yourself
- Licence. Make sure the company holds a valid ARDFM licence for the required class of insurance. A life insurance company (LIC) and a general insurance company have different licences and offer different products.
- Current name. Insurance companies undergo rebranding, reorganizations and mergers, so an old name from the list may not match the present one.
- Guarantee of payments. For the types of insurance covered by the guarantee system, if an insurer loses its licence, payments may be made by the Insurance Payments Guarantee Fund within the limits set by law.
- Financial statements and ratings. The statements of insurance organizations are published; agency ratings should be assessed taking into account the date of assignment.

Frequently asked questions
Can the client choose the insurance company?
Yes. The broker prepares a comparison and gives recommendations, but the final choice of insurer remains with the client. If you have preferences, or a bank or counterparty requires a particular company, these are taken into account in the selection.
Why does the list include companies that are not on the market now?
The list has been preserved as a historical list of companies featured in Polis Re materials. Over the life of the market, some companies have been renamed, reorganized or have ceased operations. Therefore the current status of the insurer is always checked before a contract is concluded.
If you need to select an insurance company for a specific risk, you can get a consultation from a broker.
